Omar TV Series

Omar is a Ramadan tv series that mainly follows the life of Omar, the Prophet Muhammad's friend who became the second Caliph of Islam.  Omar is a historical drama that shows how Islam was first received in its birthplace of Saudi Arabia and the persecution that Muslims faced there.  Many important events are depicted like the immigration of the first Muslims to Ethiopia for safety.  Important people are portrayed like Bilal, the Ethiopian former slave who lived in Saudi Arabia and converted/reverted to Islam and who Muhammad appointed as the first muezzin (person who performs the call to prayer.)  Also portrayed is Shifa bint Abdullah who was the first Muslim female teacher.  I love the fact that slaves are shown (African and Arab) and women are also shown who have something to say!!  Many of the women (including the slave women) are outspoken and knowledgeable about their religion.  Bonus:  There are English subtitles.
